Weight loss and nuts, including pistachio nuts, usually don’t belong in the same sentence. This is because nuts are often associated with fat and calories, which is why dieters avoid them as much as possible. However, there are studies that show just how indulging in pistachios occasionally can lead to weight loss.
Three Reasons Why Pistachios are Good for Your Weight Loss Plan
Pistachio nuts are naturally high in calories and fat and the combination can easily result to weight gain. Half a cup of these nuts already have 170 calories and 13 grams of fat. What’s more, this has almost two grams of saturated fat and this is when there is still no salt added to pistachios. However, pistachios are great for those on a diet for three reasons:
1. If you think about it, one pistachio is around four calories. Comparing it to other nuts like walnuts, pistachios are considered snacks that have low calories, since other denser nuts come with over 350 calories and over 30 grams of fat.
2. While it is true that pistachios are indeed fatty, the fat they contain are actually known as monounsaturated fat, which is a healthy kind of fat. In fact, it should be included in your healthy diet, because it can increase your cholesterol levels – the good cholesterol of course. Plus, monounsaturated fat can improve your skin and your hair’s health. Aside from these facts, pistachios have six grams of protein for every half cup you consume. The same measurement also comes with three grams of fiber. Both protein and fiber have a major role in helping you lose weight.
3. Pistachios are great for dieters. You can snack on them as much as you want because it does not promote overeating. As you continue to shell the nuts one by one, it is easy to control the number of portions you consume.
A Word of Caution
Before you start adding pistachios to your diet, it is important to note that there is still no firm evidence that these nuts can help you lose weight fast. In fact, the Nutrition Journal published a study in which there were researchers who studied a group of people who consumed pistachios for more than 12 weeks. In the study, everyone who ate pistachios regularly did not see any difference in their weight. However, the group with the most number of pistachios eaten has experienced several health benefits, including lower blood sugar levels and the prevention of metabolic syndrome.
