Some like it black, while others like it with cream or sugar or both. For some health enthusiasts, coffee is not the best drink out there. The bad reputation though is often unwarranted. Coffee, when consumed moderately, can provide several benefits. In fact, you can even make the drink healthier. Whenever you sip your coffee in the morning or at any time of the day, here are some things you can add to the beverage to make it healthier:

Salt

This may come as a surprise to many coffee drinkers, but adding salt can actually lessen the bitterness of the drink. There are a few different ways to put salt in coffee, including adding it directly to the coffee grounds before you brew. However, if you already have good beans, there is really no need for you to try neutralizing the bitter flavor. If you have cold brewed coffee though, salt can be a great addition to the beverage.

Stevia

If you don’t like “salty” coffee, here’s one alternative option for sugar – stevia. With stevia, you avoid unwanted calories because this is slightly more natural than other artificial sweeteners like the ones you find in the market.

Honey

Just like with stevia, you can minimize the amount of calories you get from coffee by adding honey instead of sugar.

Agave

Another healthy addition to your coffee is agave, which is a natural sweetener. Agave nectar or syrup has many health benefits, including having low glycemic index and minerals, such as calcium and magnesium.

Cinnamon

Coffee need not be boring and unhealthy.

If you don’t have a sweet tooth or you prefer to spice up your coffee, you can use cinnamon, which is one of the healthiest spices in the world. It has many health benefits, including stabilizing blood sugar levels and reducing LDL or bad cholesterol. Cinnamon also contains iron and vitamin K.

Cocoa Powder

One more option for spicing up your coffee is to put cocoa powder in it. This addition to coffee can give you protein, zinc, and potassium. Without question, this can make your drink much healthier because of the many nutrients it contains. Aside from the mentioned minerals, cocoa powder also offers magnesium, iron, dietary fiber, and copper. Note though that this has high amounts of saturated fat, so add in moderation.

On its own, coffee is actually healthy already because of the antioxidants it contains. However, you can make it healthier by choosing the right additions to the drink, instead of going for traditional add-ons, such as sugar and cream.
