Hugging is universally known to have healing powers. Research has shown that hugging, along with laughing, is effective at preventing and treating diseases, depression, stress, anxiety, and loneliness.

There are also studies that propose how a proper deep hug in which our hearts are pressed together can provide several benefits namely:

  1. Hugs are nurturing and it can build trust, while providing a sense of security. They are even used to call forth honest and open interactions.
  2. Hugs can actually reduce your worries about death. According to a study published in Psychological Science, hugs can significantly reduce fears. Hugging people as well as inanimate objects, such teddy bears, can truly soothe existential fears, which can then instill a sense of existential worth.
  3. When you hug your mom, your dad, or your special someone, this act releases the hormone known as oxytocin. This hormone is a neurotransmitter that affects the limbic system of the brain in which it is considered the center of emotions. In this case, the hormone can promote feelings of satisfaction, while reducing stress and anxiety. According to studies, the oxytocin hormone even endorses monogamy in mammals. This hormone is extremely important to us humans – even experts believe that without oxytocin, there would be no us.
  4. Another reason why you should hug the people around you who matter is that it will warm your heart. This can actually be good for your health. In an experiment conducted at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, those who didn’t have physical contact with their lovers experienced a quicker heart rate of at least 10 beats every minute. This is in contrast to those participants who were able to embrace their partners, so their heart rate measure five beats per minute.

  5. Hugging also promotes the production of dopamine. Everything that you do affects the flow of dopamine, which is why many drugs are created to protect it. However, when the problems are not solved in the dopamine flow, it is possible for you to become seriously depressed. Without proper production of dopamine, individuals will develop some form of mental illness. In fact, low levels of dopamine can increase the risk of acquiring Parkinson’s disease and other neurodegenerative diseases.

Hugging is indeed beneficial to your health as seen on the listed advantages above. However, even if you don’t know what the benefits are, hugs can make you feel good and happy. This is enough reason why you shouldn’t stop yourself from hugging people you love.
