Don’t judge the fruit by its looks.
Appearance shouldn’t just be the only thing that matters especially in the food you eat. It may not sound very appealing, but eating unsightly fruits and vegetables is slowly becoming a trend these days. One of the ugly foods is cherimoya, which looks like a prehistoric tropical fruit that comes with a thick green skin that resembles scales.
Cherimoya is super sweet, which is why the Incas only fed it to royalty. Mark Twain even mentioned the cherimoya and dubbed it as the most delicious fruit in the world. The taste is a blend of other fruits, including mango, papaya, banana, and pineapple. Cherimoyas are quite popular in Latin America. Even though it may look like a rotting pear to the eyes of a new observer, this fruit is not only delicious, but nutritious as well.
Health Benefits of Cherimoya
This fruit that comes from South America has a ton of health benefits, including being rich in dietary fiber. This is a type of carbohydrate that can help protect you from various chronic diseases, including obesity, cardiovascular disease, and type 2 diabetes.
Cherimoyas also have potassium, which is used by the body to digest and break down the carbohydrates that you consume. This fruit also comes with copper, which is needed to produce more energy. Both of these minerals, potassium and copper, are used to improve the function of the brain. Potassium can assist the nerves when it comes to sending electrical signals to the brain. Meanwhile copper helps the body metabolize the chemicals that are used to send signals to and from the nerve cells.
Just like most fruits, cherimoyas also have vitamin C where each fruit contains up to 30 mg of the mentioned vitamin. When you have enough vitamin C in your body, this will encourage the production of collagen, which is essential in maintaining the strength of your tissues.
Why Cherimoya isn’t so Popular
Despite being sweet and nutritious, it is quite rare to find cherimoyas at restaurants’ menus and shops that sell smoothies. This is often attributed to the exterior appearance of the fruit that almost reminds you of a reptile. Plus, the fruit is not too cheap because it is exotic and therefore difficult to find.
If you are on a mission to eat not only the common fruits around, you should definitely try cherimoyas. You can add them as an ingredient to your flans, sorbets, and smoothies or you can eat the raw fruit for dessert.
