Have you noticed that whenever you drink coffee you tend to be in a better mood? Yes, it happens and no, you’re not alone. That euphoria you get whenever you have a cup of Joe is real and has been confirmed by a study done by the Harvard School of Public Health.

Drinking Coffee Makes You Happy

The study had more than 40,000 men and 150,000 women. They all drank coffee and it was later discovered that coffee is not just a stimulant, but actually has effects that are comparable to mild antidepressants.

The results were published in the World Journal of Biological Psychology, but the researchers were still unsure how coffee makes people happy. Since coffee is a stimulant and can provide the same effects as some antidepressants, the study concluded that coffee can lower suicide risk in a person. Although there is not much explanation, drinking coffee and other beverages with caffeine as well as eating caffeinated foods can be rewarding. It is even compared to the effects of some drugs, such as marijuana.

Nevertheless, researchers believe that coffee can inspire the nervous system to produce more neurotransmitters in the brain. These neurotransmitters, include noradrenaline, dopamine, and serotonin – all of which help you de-stress and make you feel pleasant.

Drinking Coffee Encourages Positivity

In another study, German researchers discovered that those who drank coffee regularly were able to find the positive words quicker than those who didn’t drink the beverage. There had been other studies that suggested that people are actually more prone to finding negative words, images, or sounds than positive ones. Caffeine can change this common trait, according to the German study, because of its ability to increase dopamine production. Dopamine is actually a brain chemical that is linked with creativity, addiction, impulsivity, and rewards.
